Rugby Poland : Lubuskie Rugby Club, Skwierzyna, Poland

Rugby might be a great game with a long history, but in Poland the sport isn't one of the most popular! In fact, very few people know anything at all about the sport. This is something our little rugby club hopes will change, given time and greater coverage of the game on tv and so on. Anyway, for the moment, at least, we appear to be one of the few groups of people playing rugby in Poland, and as far as we are aware are the only people playing rugby in the province of Lubuskie in the west of Poland.

Rugby is a game which originated in England out of a primitive game where for amusement villagers would run with a young pig from one village to another, employing various methods of dodging, dashing, passing, or just bashing through en masse to get to the goal. These primitive contests became refined over time and eventually emerged as rugby, football, etc.

Our club has substituted the piglet for a ball, scaled down the playing area, lessened the number of players, and refined the rules a little. But to the casual observer, the rugby our club plays, might seem remarkably close to its roots.

We play a shortened and smaller scale version of the sport known as 'rugby sevens'. And as our players are from two different towns we play in both towns, Gorzow and Skwierzyna. As both towns are in the province of Lubuskie, we call our loosely organised club, Lubuskie Rugby Football Club. If you play seven a side rugby and would like to play us do get in touch. You can be sure of an interesting game!
